Hongkong Guide: Traveling with a Toddler
Getting There
So this was a story of my little family exploring Hongkong as first timers. We had 11 months baby in tow so choosing Hongkong being two hours away from Manila was a good choice I thought.......until he began crying 15 minutes before our landing time in Hongkong Airport.
We caught unprepared, I booked a 7pm to 9pm schedule thinking he might be sleeping while on plane but we were at the airport three hours before our flight so after walking around he fell asleep until before our boarding time. My plan is to stay him awake but it just happened while sitting in his stroller, the saleslady in one of the store told me "Tulog na po ang baby nyo".
He is patient in his first few hours in the plane, once in while eat his snack and watching us playing Talking Tom. After a while he got annoyed and want some other things to do while me wishing in silent that maybe I can appease him by breastfeeding but unluckily he started crying so out loud. He stopped when I carried him to the comfort room, peek inside and do some story telling. I had to do it for the remaining minutes before our landing.
Lesson learned: Short movies of Talking Tom is Julio's favorite. He can stay still for a while watching it, I should download one of the clips and let him watch during his tantrum minutes. Oh well.
Accomodation/AirBnb Room
We chose to stay at Mongkok in Mainland. This was great spot for us being in between the two other major island such as Hongkong Island where Ocean Park located and Lantau Island where Disneyland situated. For a budget accomodation we always use Airbnb because we need to cook for the baby and we know Airbnb rooms are always equipped with things we needed such as refrigerator, stove and kitchen utensils.
We landed at airport around 9pm, waited for almost an hour for our baggage then one hour travel to Mongkok via bus. We reached the apartment around 11pm, me carrying asleep Julio while Jhun was in charge of our two luggage bags and one backpack bag.

Our Room @ Wingwah Bldg, Shantung Street A few minutes walk from the bus stop @ Bank Center |
The apartment was good for 6pax @ Php 5,464 ($107) per night. Since we are four, that becomes Php 1,366 to each of us. To book Melody's apartment here's her listing at Airbnb. |
First room has double deck good for 2 persons. We are group of 4 persons but unfortunately for some personal reason the two didn't make it. |
The second room is our room. This one has window facing the busy street of Sai Yeung Choi Street |
Mongkok is perhaps one of the most crowded district in HK so even arriving at 11pm streets were still busy but surprisingly clean and safe. Mongkok gives a lively atmosphere, music is everywhere and streets are full of people specially at night markets. Smoking area was everywhere too, Jhun being sensitive to Julio hates walking around because of this. Our lodging is 3 minutes away from the MTR and the Bus Stop so going around is easy and cheap.
We bought an Octopus Card and Iventure Card from Klook. We picked them up at airport. The octopus card already has 50 HKD, enough for us to go Mongkok by bus which charged us 33HKD. The next day we loaded the card with 300HKD (Php 2,100.00) at the nearest 7-11. We used the card mostly at MTR (Mass Transit Railway) and one time purchase in convenience store, the good thing 300HKD lasted for our whole 6 days stay.
